Sharon Kae Dettbarn
Sharon Kae Dettbarn, 80, of Hopkinton, Iowa, passed away on October 23, 2024, in her home with her husband Ron by her side. Sharon was born on December 8, 1943, in Monticello, Iowa the twin daughter to Fred and Frieda (Ricklefs) Cords. She was raised and educated in Delhi and was a 1961 graduate of Maquoketa Valley High School. Sharon began her career at Rockwell Collins in 1962 in Manufacturing as an assembly operator. She worked her way up and in 1972 became an Industrial Engineering Technician and held that position until she retired on January 31, 2002.
During this time, she was united in marriage to Ron Dettbarn of Hopkinton on June 11, 1966. They started their family while living in Delhi and had 2 children, a daughter and a son. In 1975 they moved to Hopkinton where they have built their home and many memories. Sharon enjoyed playing softball and was an avid bowler. She followed Ron for many years to his softball games and enjoyed videotaping them. She traveled many a mile following her daughter and son through high school and college sports. Many people will remember Sharon for her large, impressive Christmas light and wooden displays which they made together. She was very proud of them, and it was well deserved. Retirement allowed them to proudly follow their granddaughter and grandson back to the ball fields they loved so much in their glory days. When Ron decided to hang up his softball cleats, they found a love for the game of golf. They traveled with friends to play golf and were members of the Monticello Golf Club for many years where they played in couple’s tournaments and enjoyed their time with family and friends.
Those left to cherish her memory include her husband of fifty-seven years, Ron of Hopkinton; her daughter Kendy (Brad) Bohlken of Monticello and her son Rod (Stacey) Dettbarn of Marion; her granddaughter Kori (Trevor) Haasis of North Liberty and grandson Grady Dettbarn of Marion; her twin sister Karen (Ron) Gray of Manchester, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Frieda Cords, her older brother Dale Cords in 2011, and her beloved brother-in-law Ron Gray in 2011. She shared her last day on earth with her older sister, Shirley Hernley on October 23, 2024.
In honor of Sharon’s wishes there will be no visitation/viewing or Celebration of Life. Her close family said their good byes to her privately at their home. If you wish to send a memorial, please direct them to the family who plans on distributing funds in Sharon’s name to her favorite charities.
The family would like to thank the staff at Iowa Cremation for their kindness and professionalism during this difficult time.
